Liam's story

Stephan is the tables and details master (once an engineer, always an engineer!). A little hesitant to abscond from suburban comfort, he warmed up to the project to the point of heat stroke and generated an expansive “library” of resources and info.

En route, he is to be the video op and computer guru, the excursions planner and main driver, mechanic, “24 hour man”, Jack-of-all-trades, and, as Musician Emeritus turned windjammer (name an instrument and the man finds a way to play it with talent), will provide endless hours of evening entertainment.

Lydie is the instigator (something about not knowing if your child will see the next day modifies your outlook on life). Art buff and ethnologist at heart, she digs out all there is to discover along the trip, serves as liaison with administrations, sponsors and associations, and trains for cancer diagnosis awareness. She will continue as spokesperson, editorial and photo staff and aside from basic intendance in the “pie car”, will endorse the home-schooling --can’t escape your profession-- and will endeavor to unearth any possible Latin dance floors (Salsa Siempre!).

Jeremy and Axel (12) have decided to follow a Humanities and Law Magnet school for International Studies this year and are enthused with world cultures, language, mythology, journalism, environment, peace and science.

Besides daily instruction, they will alternate at navigation (use of GPS and maps, distance calculation, guiding) and historical and cultural sites research. They will also, of course, carry along their soccer ball, trumpet, saxophone, MP3 players and constant chatting!

Liam (9) in his usual tranquil demeanor affirmed “it’ll be useful to know what sick children need”. Why? But he wants to be a doctor of course! Meanwhile, he will still have quarterly blood counts checks and will work on keeping good grades. He offered to be responsible for natural landmarks (rivers, mountains, volcanoes, etc).

Julian (5), our rookie and clown-in-chief, is happy to go with the flow though his perception of countries and cancer is quite blurry. He wants to spot and know all about the animals we will meet, and his great expectation is to “bike without training wheels around the world”! Julian’s artistic talents are displayed all over our site.

The ringleaders: French living in the US, they met in Switzerland in 1988. That’s right: 20 years before the start of the journey; what a way to celebrate an anniversary!

Both ardent outdoors lovers and foreign cultures aficionados, they’ve already roamed on three continents on many forms of bikes, scooters, kayaks, horses, etc.
